Benefits of Organic Foods for Weight Loss

Can Organic Food Help Weight Loss?

weight loss with organic foods

Successful weight loss is a balance of nutrition and exercise, but can eating organic food help make losing weight more successful?  Eating high quality food is important, but we have been led to believe a calorie is a calorie, while that makes sense in mathematics all calories are not equal.

Why Non Organic Can Prevent Weight Loss?

All foods are processed differently by the body, most pre-packaged and processed foods and non organic foods have chemicals, fillers, hidden sugars as well and  well to be honest, just aren’t actually food. As a result this make up of “so called food” changes the chemicals in the body, depletes the body of the nutrients it needs to function properly and to release the weight. In fact most “foods” do the opposite.

Pesticides, in particular organochlorines, are stored in fat cells. When fat cells are utilized for energy, pesticides flow into the bloodstream slow the metabolism, interfering with weight loss and in some cases preventing it. They seem to interfere with the body’s ability to burn fat.

The food industry doesn’t like people to speak up about what really goes on, but the important thing is we switch our focus to organic food for health and weight loss. Because organic is free from the above unwanted our body is able to work properly, burn calories and gives a much better chance of losing weight with organic than not.

Think of This!

You have 2 apples one organic the other sprayed or treated. The treated apple looks pretty, perfect and shiny, while the organic looks not so perfect, a little flawed even but when you take a bite you can tell the difference. Both apples but the way the body processes them is different. The organic apple enters the digestive system and the nutrients enter the blood stream and nourish the body, the non organic, still gets digested, but along with the fruit may be pesticides, chemicals that also enter the blood stream, and as a result changes the chemicals. I’ll go as far to say that there are other so called foods that are made of the same components petroleum and plastic, these enter the fat cells among other areas in the body, they cause disease, contribute to illness and as far as weight loss these chemicals can cause the growth of more fat cells and hinder the loss. So you can see why organic is better and why all foods or calories are not equal.

Why Organic for Eating Makes Sense

Choosing to eat organic food makes sense for so many reasons, whether you want to lose weight, be more both healthy physically and emotionally. Most everything except organic, fruits, vegetables, grains, meats, fish, and packaged staples are laden with potentially harmful toxins. Poor soil, pesticides, antibiotics, steroids and low quality feeds for animals make their way into these food sources, negatively impact the body’s ability to metabolize foods to lose weight  ***Let alone how these foods affect our energy fields, psyche and emotions, which we cover in other articles. Eating organic is a preventative health measure and it make sense to make the shift for wellness.

A Little About Organic Farming – Simplified

Organic farmers have a lot to contend with, there are more rules and regulations for Organic certification that growing toxic foods. Organic farms typically have to have virgin soil, meaning nothing grown or chemically touched for at least 10 years. Their seeds are more expensive and to keep the fruits, vegetables healthy and spray free they take careful and costly measure to grow. Also they can lose a lot more produce due to pests and insects that are not deterred by chemicals. Quality costs and there are not the Government subsidies  as readily available as for conventional farming. Many organic farmers do not grow for profit but for passion, health and the good of the planet. They tend to be smaller operations and as a result make only a small profit.

Weight Loss and Organic Food

We have covered the main reasons do dump the junk, foods that is! Now its time to look at eating organically to get healthy lose the weight and improve our mental health. Investing in ourselves by eating organic is worth it, now I know some people say they can’t afford to eat organic but can you afford not too? The weight loss industry is a multi billion dollar a year business, and it continues to be, because it is not working, yet we spend money on weight loss pills, diet plans and exercise equipment desperate to lose the pounds, so when all is considered is organic really that expensive?

Organic Foods to Buy

The Environmental Working Group, ewg.org, publishes two lists annually. List 1 “The Dirty Dozen,” shares the list of fruits and vegetables with the highest pesticide levels; these should always be purchased as organics.

The second list, “The Clean 15,” tells which fruits and vegetables may be purchased as organically farmed or conventionally farmed because they have lower pesticide levels.

The lists contain produce commonly available and grown in the United States. EWG develops its recommendations based on pesticide testing data collected by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Buy These Organic – According to EWG the following foods should be purchased as organics:
• Peppers – bell and hot peppers
• Carrots
• Celery
• Cucumbers
• Green beans
• Lettuce
• Potatoes
• Spinach
• Apples
• Cherries
• Imported grapes
• Nectarines
• Peaches
• Pears
• Raspberries
• Strawberries

Many of the items are thin skinned, rest in the soil, grow on the vine increasing  pesticide exposure.

While I advocate for organic, the below listed are considered to have a lower level of pesticides make them acceptable to purchase the conventional grown versions: You Choose!
• Avocados
• Broccoli
• Cabbage
• Cauliflower
• Eggplant
• Onions
• okra
• Peas
• Mushrooms
• Radishes
• sweet corn
• Tomatoes
• Bananas ***** This one I question as many Countries gas banana’s to speed up the growth process and insects
• Blueberries
• Cantaloupe
• Grapefruit
• U.S.-grown grapes
• Honeydew
• Kiwi
• papaya
• Pineapples
• Plums
• Lemons
• Limes
• Mangoes
• Oranges
• Tangerines
• Watermelon

Along with choosing organic, there are other ways to decrease pesticide exposure and improve your opportunity for weight loss success. Always wash all fruits and vegetables with non toxic soap, soak certain vegetables in lightly salted water and rinse well and pat dry. If you find yourself purchasing the conventional version of one of the dirty dozen, peel away the skin if possible.
